"We are ready," says Steve Mombach, vice president of ambulatory services and senior health for TriHealth. "The campus is looking great and we truly are down to the final touches." The 47,000-square-foot center will provide the same services and care as a full-scale hospital.

Baltimore-area hospitals mull new way to treat, charge their patients
Some local hospital leaders say an emerging model for treating patients could improve their well-being and restructure the way hospitals and physicians are paid. Dr. John Chessare, president of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, said his hospital is transitioning into an accountable care organization by partnering with physicians groups. GMBC has an employed physicians group, Greater Baltimore Medical Associates, and is contracting with private practicing physicians to better coordinate patient care.

Central Florida hospitals' profits up 88 percent in 2009
Central Florida hospitals cruised through 2009 with a combined 88 percent jump in profits, thanks to a recovering stock market, increased admissions and their efforts to cut expenses. Florida Hospital, which has 2,188 beds at seven hospital campuses, had a $158.4 million profit in 2009, up 33.9 percent from 2008.

Methodist announces affiliation with hospital in Botswana
Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare entered into an affiliation agreement with Bokamoso Private Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana and assisted in developing policies and procedures, clinical protocols and other requirements for optimum hospital operations. A 200-bed acute care hospital, Bokamoso Private Hospital was opened on January 11, 2010, by OR International LLC, a hospital development and management company.

New surgery center part of JCMC’s update plan
A new, $65 million inpatient surgical center will be constructed at Johnson City Medical Center, creating a new venue for cutting-edge procedures. The new, 16-room surgical center will replace the current 15 rooms housed in the core of JCMC. Because of the difficulty of updating the existing rooms due to infrastructure and size restrictions, Mountain States Health Alliance officials decided to build the new center onto the southwest side of the hospital.

Carolinas hospitals look for savings from healthcare reform
Hospital officials are still sorting out how the landmark legislation will affect their operations. Charlotte-based Carolinas HealthCare System — which owns, operates or manages 32 hospitals — says its costs for charity care, discounts for uninsured and bad debt costs totaled $177 million in 2008. Stroke centers ahead for Medina, Lewiston
Two more area hospitals are expected to receive state approval as designated stroke centers in early April. The State Department of Health has recommended approvals for Medina Memorial Health Care Facility and Mount St. Mary Hospital and Health Center into the state stroke center program. The State Hospital Review & Planning Council are expected to accept the recommendations at its April 8 meeting. Currently, Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in Niagara, Orleans or Genesee counties designated in the state program.
