Providence Health & Services, a not-for-profit Catholic health system serving
communities in Alaska, Washington, Montana, Oregon and California, with
28 hospitals and other health, housing and educational services.
Challenge:
Variation in medication utilization and outcomes for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention procedures at 12 hospitals with cath labs.
Solution:
- Using ClinicalAdvisor™, multi-center utilization report data was combined with clinical outcome data.
- Outcomes were compared (mortality, complication rate, readmits) to medications used by risk stratification as well as to overall data of all facilities.
- Using cost per case and clinical outcomes benchmarks, significant gaps were identified.
- Significant gaps were identified in cost per case as well as clinical outcomes.
- Data was presented to key interventional cardiologists at each facility as well as to the pharmacy and medical leadership.
- Labs reviewed data and implemented measures, including education and protocol changes to address identified issues.
Results:
Identified savings opportunity of $1.1 million through improved drug utilization in cath labs; savings to date are $287,000 and climbing.
“It was well received by cardiologists. I said, ‘Here’s the data,’ and they
started sharing. In conference calls with cardiologists from different
facilities, looking at the ClinicalAdvisor™ data started great conversations
right off the bat. At cardiology committees where it was presented across the
system, it was well received. This is the way I presented it: ‘It’s a starting
point, not the end.’”
