Premier is ready for comparative effectiveness. Are you?

Using comparative effectiveness research (CER), pharmaceuticals, medical devices and medical procedures that are used to treat the same condition are evaluated for relative safety and effectiveness to potentially cut healthcare costs while improving the quality of care. Tap into Premier’s comparative database for objective research to help support your CER efforts.

Drug utilization

Premier analyzed the healthcare resources consumed within a hospital setting. The study focused on patients diagnosed with peripheral arterial occlusion (PAO). Premier performed a secondary analysis to determine the total cost of treating patients with PAO, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism.

Cost of care

Premier performed a cardiovascular study focusing on hyperlipidemia. We analyzed hospital costs and charges associated with the total care of patients who were prescribed an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. The analysis further assessed the adverse events on a product-by-product basis.

Simulation modeling

For a medical equipment manufacturer, Premier applied simulation modeling to clinical interventions. Premier measured the impact of product usage on length of stay and costs for ICU patients at high risk of developing a specific disease.

Treatment utilization/cost of care analysis

Premier assisted a major pharmaceutical manufacturer in understanding the oncology marketplace from both a clinical and financial outcomes perspective. Utilization data was provided for currently available therapies, treatment (inpatient/outpatient) settings and reimbursement activity for oncology products.

Drug tracking and cost of care analysis

Premier helped the international parent of a U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturer to understand utilization and cost-of-care patterns associated with anesthetics and analgesics during surgical cases and vaginal and cesarean deliveries. Premier also provided a report on the future state of anesthetic and analgesic techniques.

Clinical trial replication

Premier assisted a pharmaceutical client in assessing patients admitted to the hospital with congestive heart failure who were subsequently randomized to one of two specific vasodilators. The client was interested in the patient outcomes (e.g., length of stay, cost of care, complications, and readmission) for each cohort. An important component of the project was the vasodilator time of administration (i.e., within 24, 48, or 72 hours) and the subsequent patient outcome. The ability to delineate patient resource utilization on a day-to-day basis and disease progression (as defined by days in CCU, resources consumed and length of stay) was instrumental in addressing the need.

Market opportunity

Premier designed a sophisticated analysis of a disease state for a pharmaceutical manufacturer to provide comprehensive insight into all elements of care associated with a specific diagnosis. The research identified current competitive therapy and potential market opportunity.

Clinical trial design

Premier conducted a retrospective analysis of health systems data that enabled enhancement of trial design. By understanding population attributes, Premier helped develop the best entrance protocols to enhance the patient recruitment process. Additionally, we optimized trial process protocols by analyzing current standards of care and prevalence of procedures in the health system setting.

Health outcomes analysis

Premier studied true outcomes (length of stay, comorbidity, costs) associated with the use of a particular drug therapy/medical product. This study gave manufacturers a better understanding of potential care gaps in the current standard of care for a disease or medical condition.

Market penetration analysis

Premier assisted a major pharmaceutical client in examining the utilization of the GPllb/llla's and other anti-platelet agents in a specific disease state, Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS). The study scope included examination of medical management pathways with or without surgical intervention. Patient stratification based on severity level was incorporated into the analysis of medical management and surgical intervention.

Case-cohort study

A major pharmaceutical manufacturer needed assistance in quantifying changes in length of stay for pneumonia patients following the switch from their agent to a competitive agent. Because the switch was driven by a particular cohort of hospitals, we were able to use control and test periods for the group that switched and identify a comparable group of hospitals which did not switch to determine the impact of the switching activity on the patients.

Formulary impact analysis

Premier assisted the innovator of a specialized pharmaceutical enhancement process by providing a retrospective pharmacoeconomic analysis based on patient-level cost data relative to the use of a treatment agent for a chronic, episodic-based disease state. The analysis was designed to determine formulary impact of prior treatment modalities and the breakeven point for using alternative treatment options. Premier completed a prospective study based on their new drug's impact on therapeutic outcomes.

Chart review capability

In addition to routine data and analytic services, Premier can also conduct retrospective hospital chart reviews to gain access to additional clinical data found in patient medical records.
