Strategic Energy Management Planning Tools (SEMP) - from BetterBricks

An initiative of the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance and supported by local electric utilities in the Northwest.

Tools, resources, case studies, checklists, spreadsheets, calculators, for making the case to leadership, energy management planning, calculating life cycle costs, financing options, improving building operations, building system diagnosis, building high performing design and construction, sample RFPs for equipment, tips for staff and public awareness of energy efficiency, tools for tracking and recognition. The Hospitals and Healthcare resources section is organized by the SEMP steps and includes tools such as PowerPoint presentations and management plan templates.

United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA)

The U.S. EPA has numerous energy-related resources, including the ENERGY STAR program and energy benchmarking tools as well as concepts, real data and proven strategies. Please visit their Web site for a complete listing. Among the tools offered by EPA are:

The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE)

ASHE of the American Hospital Association is a professional organization that is dedicated to creating an environment for healing. In addition to the Energy Efficiency Commitment (E2C), supporting the goals of the EPA’s Energy Star Challenge, ASHE has established a peer networking forum, sharing of tools and best practices, case studies, awards, educational programs, data management and benchmarking using EPA's Portfolio Manager

In partnership with EPA’s Energy Star, ASHE launched the Energy Efficient Commitment (E2C) program. Building on the successes of energy benchmarking through EPA Energy Star and the publishing of ASHE's Healthcare Energy Guidebook, E2C shares fundamental concepts, real data, proven strategies, financial tools, and local success stories by ASHE members.

Assistance is provided to uncover energy savings in building designs and operations and benchmarking of energy usage with EPA’s Portfolio manager with a special ASHE benchmarking group. E2C also has established a peer networking forum and Web site to share best practices, case studies, and education program information. Recognition awards are given for achieving a 10 percent documented energy savings.

Practice Greenhealth (PGH)

Practice Greenhealth is a new non-profit membership organization that combines and builds on three powerful initiatives to improve environmental performance in healthcare.

It is the successor to Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E), which has joined forces with the Green Guide for Health Care (GGHC) and the Healthcare Clean Energy Exchange (HCEE), with the combined goal of creating programs designed to improve environmental performance in healthcare.

Health Care Without Harm (HCWH)

HCWH is an international coalition of 450 groups in 55 countries working to reduce the environmental impact of the healthcare industry. Just as the Hippocratic Oath promises to "First, do no harm," HCWH is based on the premise that healthcare providers have a responsibility to eliminate practices that harm public health and the environment. HCWH has many position papers and resources on safer medical products, medical waste, design and construction operations, healthy food, workplace safety, and environmental justice.

HCWH and Practice Greenhealth have developed a Health Impact Calculator that evaluates energy use and sources of energy (fossil fuels or renewable sources) and costs related to these fuel sources and also calculates the health impact (e.g., asthma, respiratory illness, etc).
